i make pictures of the far country, and i have collected a few jobs that keep me out in it.
the trans-pecos is the piece of texas most people drive around. i've spent the better part of two decades photographing it — the light on the chisos, the river cutting through santa elena, the towns that hold on out here because somebody has to.
in 2020 the work turned toward people. the drive-by porchraits project put me on a few hundred sidewalks, making portraits of families who couldn't have anybody inside. it remains the most human thing i've done with a camera.
the rest of the week i'm on a river, on a fire call, or on a stage with a guitar. none of it is separate from the photography. it's all just being out here, paying attention.
